Sing to Promote Speech and Language Development

North Shore Pediatric BlogPlay Pals North Shore BlogMadison Pediatric BlogPlay Pals Madison Blog

What if there was an activity to support your child’s speech and language development – that did not require extra time AND was free? And also provides an opportunity for you and your child to interact? There is – singing! (*Bonus* you don’t have to be good at it either!)

Singing songs with your child provides sound production, whether it is babbling, speech sounds, or words, as well as language. There are also songs about daily routines (e.g., washing hands, waiting, etc.), which promote language related to that activity. Just like songs on the radio, these can be repeated everyday as well!

Here are a few songs to get you started:

  • For handwashing (to the tune of ‘Here We Go ‘Round the Mulberry Bush’)

  • Old MacDonald Had a Farm
  • Itsy Bitsy Spider
  • Wheels on the Bus
  • Children’s CDs and family friendly radio stations are also a great resource for songs!
  • Make up your own song!

Have fun!
