Officially, KGH Autism Services began in January 2001. But the philosophy it’s built on started taking shape back in 1993.
That’s when I found a flyer on the Psychology Department bulletin board offering $8 an hour to work with a child with autism. I had no idea what autism was but the job paid better than the library.
Soon, I was knocking on a front door—and saying hello to a cute little boy who refused to make eye contact. Johnny offered me his worn, well-loved teddy bear, and though I didn’t realize it at the time, that was it. I had found my calling.
Working with Johnny showed me firsthand how to teach a child with autism and what to teach a child with autism. For nearly 4 years, his family and I created homemade teaching materials, navigated intense behaviors and celebrated everything from Johnny’s first words to his first day of school.
What started with a desire to help one little boy has blossomed into a team of dedicated clinicians who share the same goal—helping our clients and their families reach their maximum potential—and the same unshakable beliefs:
Every child has great potential to learn and grow. Supporting children as they change and grow is an honor and a responsibility.
Every family’s life changes after a diagnosis. Our knowledge and compassion can equip loved ones for the journey ahead.
Every treatment is only as strong as the treatment team. We owe children and their families the finest clinicians and the best possible care.
